PCWorld.com - 101 Fabulous Freebies

PCWorld.com - 101 Fabulous Freebies

PC World has published an article called 101 Fabulous Freebies which is a round-up of apps, web sites, and services that you can use for free. Their "outrageously useful" tools are broken up into categories like "Tune Up," "Find It," and "Lock It Up," and they're fairly well-chosen, though I'm sure most readers could think of at least a couple things they've left out. It also includes some welcome round-ups of RSS readers, webmail, blogging tools, and video sharing sites.

Identifont - identify fonts and typefaces

This is a cool concept, that appears to work pretty well. If you've got a font that you're dying to find but you don't know the name of it, head on over to Identifont. Indentifont uses a series of graphical questions to narrow down the list of possible fonts to the specific one you are searching for.

Paper Table Lamp, Faux-Wood Veneer

Paper Table Lamp, Faux-Wood Veneer - Wal-Mart

There’s a certain amount of kitschy humor at play in a wood veneer paper lampshade (or in the name of this piece), and although we’re not quite sure the designer intended it, we think it works. The chrome-finished steel frame is sufficiently understated, and the piece comes off looking exactly like what you might expect to find at the point where Wal-Mart and modernism meet.

Stagger Shelf by Brave Space

Stagger Shelf made from bamboo.

While this Brave Space Stagger Shelf is a bit pricey ($2350), you get what you pay for. Made with vertical grain bamboo, with a non-toxic finish, the unit is as progressively designed as it is appealing to look at. A striking option for shelving, this piece can easily act as the centrepiece of a wall.

I envision perhaps along with the japanese notepaper, pictures of family, pets, friends. Hang from the foyer and make a grand statement.

Surprising Expiration Dates

Certain items in your house practically scream “toss me” when their prime has passed. That mysterious extra white layer on the Cheddar? A sure sign it needs to be put out of its misery. Chunky milk? Down the drain it goes. But what about that jar of olives or Maraschino cherries that has resided in your refrigerator since before the birth of your kindergartner? Or the innumerable nonedibles lurking deep within your cabinets and closets: stockpiled shampoo and toothpaste, seldom-used silver polish? How do you know when their primes have passed?

Thermaltake's giddy iFlash Mini is a 2,000rpm, 80mm fan with an LED that shows the ambient temperature in 'attractive' glowing red, along with a rotating company logo, no less. This stunning achievement is upstaged, however, by the company's Big Daddy iFlash 12, a 120mm version that spins in red, blue and, ugh, green. The extravaganza of color does take a toll on the fan's performance, which wilts to a paltry 1,600rpm.

Making An Operating System Faster

10 Things Apple Did To Make Mac OS X Faster

The performance of computer hardware typically increases monotonically with time. Even if the same could be said of software, the rate at which software performance improves is usually very slow compared to that of hardware. In fact, many might opine that there is plenty of software whose performance has deteriorated consistently with time. Moreover, it is rather difficult to establish an objective performance metric for software as complex as an operating system: a "faster OS" is a very subjective, context dependent phrase.

Is it OK ... to use a dishwasher?

This Dishwasher is more efficient than you!

The most efficient dishwashers on the market use less energy and water than the most slap-dash human dishwashers. In between these two extremes matters become a little less clear cut. It's worth looking at the testing method quickly to see how the results can vary.

For the small of space! Believe it or not, this dishwasher is about the size of a LARGE microwave. Fits plates up to 11 inches easily, larger items require some creative use of space. Features a stainless steel, odor-resistant interior & high-powered wash cycles (45 minutes duration).

Configuring a free VPN solution in your home:

VPNs or Virtual Private Networks

VPNs or Virtual Private Networks continue to increase in popularity due to the rise of inexpensive, high capacity Internet connectivity. Therefore lots of people are now using secure VPNs in order to connect to their home based networks as well as their office networks. If you have stumbled across this article and do not know the meaning of the term VPN it would be as follows:

A VPN is used to connect multiple private networks securely across an unsecured public network like the Internet. A private network in this case would be a network in which the traffic is not freely accessible by the public. If we break down the meaning of Virtual Private Network in the instance explained above it would be as follows. The two end points of this "network" are private networks that are seamlessly connected across a public network in which neither private network knows about, creating a "Virtual Private Network" between them.

And here is another link to another how-to.
